Digital Designer


Resident Position - 90% - Geneva

Purpose of the post

The ICRC's public and corporate communication plays a key role in its mission to ensure respect for the life and dignity of people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence. It helps enhance the ICRC's acceptance by stakeholders in the field which in turn strengthens its access to people in need, and it reinforces ICRC messages calling for behaviour change by parties to armed conflict and other situations of violence. The ICRC's communication promotes the organization, its reading of humanitarian situations and of IHL-related questions concerning specific contexts and themes. It also helps to influence decision-makers and the public at large by shaping the debate on key topics and it generates financial and other support for the ICRC.

With these objectives in mind, Digital Designer will be responsible for creating a cohesive visual identity for the ICRC across varied digital channels, serving diverse audiences in many languages and contexts. As with all digital positions, this role bridges website, social media, content, and other platforms to ensure an integrated approach to public engagement campaigns in support of the ICRC's key contexts, issues, and priorities. The Digital Designer, collaborating closely with the Digital Designers in the field, works to localize templates, guidelines, counsel and training. Located in Geneva, he or she collaborates closely with digital officers, acting as an emissary on behalf of the Digital Strategy for Engagement and Positioning and a digital/agile mindset more systemically.

Main duties and responsibilities

Visual identity and content development

  • Localize the ICRC's visual identity for a diverse set of digital products (blogs, infographics, email newsletters, social media products and others)
  • Ensure coherence of graphical elements across the range of ICRC's digital platforms, advising the central digital unit on concerns, localizing where appropriate for style, typeface, layout, design, and additional cultural considerations.
  • Develop standardized templates for infographic-style products (printable/PDF, interactive, HTML-based) to be used by regional delegations
  • Collaborate closely with digital officers working on visual assets (photos, videos, animated GIFs.
  • Assist the audiovisual team on visual elements for video projects as required
  • Work autonomously and achieve results without extensive supervision
  • Provide support for the Digital Designers in the field
  • Ability to create animated video would be an advantage

Required skills

  • A solid digital graphic design product portfolio, with experience in brand-building (graphic charts and similar) and standardizing products (templates)
  • Familiarity with infographics and mapmaking a plus
  • Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite
  • Ease of use of both Windows and Mac platforms
  • Familiarity with HTML, XHTML, CSS, XML
  • Very strong understanding of UX/UI design, usability and user-centered design concepts.
  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems (Drupal/Wordpress)
Education and experience required
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline. A master's degree in an appropriate discipline would be an advantage.
  • A minimum of four years' experience in digital design.
  • Two years' field experience either in the ICRC or a similar organization would be an advantage.

  • S/he is flexible in terms of working hours and available for short missions.
  • S/he is able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • S/he is dedicated to the mission of the ICRC and the role of humanitarianism in digital conversations.
  • S/he has extensive experience driving engagement and acquisition for a similar organization.
  • S/he has a firm understanding of Internet trends regarding design, content, development, etc.
  • S/he has strong attention to detail.

End of assignment: 31st December 2017
