Traineeships in the Detention Unit - Two positions

The Detention Unit is part of the Protection Division in the Operations Department of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Unit aims to define the ICRC policy on detention and to provide support to staff members working in the field and at Headquarters on behalf of people deprived of their liberty. Issues covered by the Unit's work include: ICRC detention methodology, detention-related law and policy, detention management, judicial guarantees, torture and ill treatment, immigration detention, women and children, health, reform and change processes.

The Detention Unit is offering two one-year paid traineeships. The post holders will work within a team on a range of detention-related themes. There are eight team members, including two traineeship positions.

Responsibilities and Tasks

1. Improving the management of knowledge on persons deprived of their liberty

The post holders will support the improvement of the unit's knowledge management practices. In particular they will:

  • Support the briefing and debriefing of delegates whose main focus is detention
  • Keep internal detention-related databases up to date

2. Research

In support of the Unit's planning and communication tasks, the post holders will:

  • Produce summaries and information notes
  • Draft background or communication documents for internal or external audiences
  • Edit and proofread documents

3. Event and training support

The detention unit is in charge of internal courses and modules relating to persons deprived of their liberty. It also organises and takes part in seminars and conferences on the subject. In support of the Unit's training and event organisation tasks, the post holders will:

  • Participate in the preparation of events, meetings and training courses
  • Support the administration of meetings and events

4. Internal and external communication

In support of the Unit's communication strategy, the post holders will:

  • Support and follow-up detention publications
  • Maintain and update the Unit's intranet and webpage

5. Administration and logistics

The post holders will manage a stock of internal and external resources on detention and provide ad-hoc administrative and logistical support to other members of the Unit.

6. Additional tasks

The post holders might be asked to contribute to other areas of work of the unit, as and when required.

Qualifications, skills and experience


  • University degree, preferably in social/political sciences or law
  •  Strong writing and editing skills in English, working proficiency in French or Spanish
  • Demonstrated ability to research, organise, and synthesise information
  • Strong interest in detention and protection issues
  • Interest in information management/communication
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Team player able to work in a multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent computer skills and strong interest in learning new tools


  • Experience of working on detention/protection, especially in direct contact with beneficiaries
  • Interest in working on protection issues and field work
  • Experience of working on publications
  • Experience in managing a webpage
  • Experience organising events
  • Experience of Sharepoint, Lotus Notes and/or other database use/editing

The post is office based and does not involve travel.

Duration: 1 year, full time
