Postdoctoral Fellow 100%

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research centre for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2000 people.

The Risk and Human Reliability group at PSI is developing quantitative models to treat human performance in risk analysis of complex socio-technical systems. In particular, one of our focuses is on models to quantify the probability of decision failures in the probabilistic risk assessment of nuclear power plants. In this context, we are looking for a

Postdoctoral Fellow

Quantitative human performance models for decision failures in probabilistic safety assessment

Your tasks

  • Develop a framework to build and validate probabilistic models, e.g. Bayesian Belief Networks, for Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) applications, based on integration of data and expert judgment (involves supervision of a PhD Student, in cooperation with PSI staff)
  • Design expert judgment elicitation sessions to inform the HRA model for decision failures (so called Errors of Commission)
  • Support PSI staff in the development and application of a method to use performance data of nuclear power plant operators in simulated conditions

Your profile

PhD degree in engineering with focus on risk analysis (e.g. mechanical, chemical, nuclear); or applied mathematics or statistics with focus on probabilistic models, data analysis, expert systems; or human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics. Knowledge of nuclear power plant systems will be considered an asset. You are motivated to work both independently and as a team member, in an international and multidisciplinary environment. You enjoy interacting with other specialists and have excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Very good knowledge of English is required.

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.

Your employment contract is limited to two years.
