The Laboratory for Waste Management (LES) is the Swiss competence center for geochemistry and multi-scale radionuclide and mass transport related to deep geological systems and Swiss radioactive waste repositories. We make use of state-of-the-art experimental facilities available at our laboratory and at PSI and interpret the experimental findings based on computer models.

For an SNF-funded research project, we are looking for a

PhD Student
Geochemistry – Mathematical modelling of transport of cations in clays
Your tasks

You will further develop existing geochemical transport codes with regard to transport and sorption processes of ions. Specifically, you will:

  • Expand such codes to include mobilities of sorbed cations (a feature that has been proven experimentally but is not included in most transport codes)
  • Test different ways of implementation of increasing complexity
  • Derive relations to be used in continuum-scale codes from pore-scale simulations (up-scaling)
  • Interpret experimental data on cation transport in clays with the improved codes
  • Communicate your results in conferences and scientific journals
Your profile
  • University degree in Geo- or Environmental Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Computational Science, or related field
  • Interest to work in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Knowledge of programming language(s) beneficial
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English, open-minded personality

You will be enrolled as a PhD student at the University of Bern. You will mainly work at PSI, but also interact with people from the Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of Bern.
