The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research centre for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. You will be part of the SwissFEL lasergroup which is exploring novel laser systems for ultrafast investigations and for applications at the X-Ray Free Electron Laser currently being built at PSI. In the present project we want to significantly extend the wavelength range of a table-top X-Ray laser and continue to use it for the study of ultrafast dynamics in solids. The soft X-Ray laser is based on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) and offers extremely short pulses down to the attosecond regime (1as=10-18sec). Our group offers unique laser systems (UV, visible, THz) to perform novel pump-probe experiments. We are looking for a
- Study ultrafast processes in condensed matter by means of a cutting-edge table-top soft X-Ray laser emitting between 100-1000 eV
- Explore novel methods for characterizing the intense soft X-Ray laser in the temporal, spatial and spectral domain with cutting edge equipment
- Study high-harmonic generation (HHG) with intense mid-infrared laser sources in order to extend the soft X-Ray laser to the water window (2.4-4.2 nm) and beyond up to 1 keV
- Collaborate with international research groups and companies and present scientific results on international conferences
The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in physics, preferably with experience in nonlinear optics, ultrafast lasers and/or condensed matter physics. You have knowledge on data analysis and evaluation You are highly motivated and enjoy experimental work in a team. Good communication skills in English (and/or German) are required. The work will be performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute.
