One of our research groups specializes in investigations of electronic and magnetic properties of quantum materials with high resolution X-Ray spectroscopies, i.e. Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) and Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES). These investigations cover a variety of correlated materials such as low dimensional systems, thin films of oxide heterostructures, and 3d- as well as 5d transition metal oxides. Resonant inelastic X-Ray scattering on iridate materials
Your tasks
Your research activity will be in the studies of the electronic structure, correlation effects and the magnetic properties of iridate materials with Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS). RIXS as a photon-in/photon-out spectroscopic method gives access to the low energy excitations directly related to the materials properties. Iridates are 5d transition metal based materials with unconventional materials properties due to their strong spin-orbit coupling. In your project you will investigate single crystals and thin films of iridate materials. You will grow thin films and oxide heterostructures with the pulsed laser deposition instruments of our group. The focus of your experimental studies will be in the spectroscopic investigation of these materials with the state-of-the-art RIXS spectrometer at the Advanced Resonant Spectroscopies (ADRESS) beamline at the SLS (http://www.psi.ch/sls/adress/).
Your profile
Excellent qualifications with a university degree (Master or equivalent) in physics, chemistry or materials sciences are required. Knowledge in the physics of correlated electron materials and principles of solid state spectroscopy would be of benefit. You enjoy practical work and like to conduct research in a team. Excellent communication skills in English are completing your application profile. You will be registered as a PhD Student at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) (https://www.epfl.ch/).
