The Thin Films & Interfaces Group, which is part of the Research with Neutrons and Muons Division, is working on the development, characterization, and processing of functional materials, often with photon-based methods, especially for renewable energy applications. One of the main topics is the deposition of thin functional oxide films by laser-based methods and spectroscopy during deposition. The aim of this SNF project is to deposit and characterize oxide thin films with multiple ferroic orders, which involves several research groups within the NUM division.

For the Thin Films & Interfaces Group we are looking for a

PhD Student
Preparation and characterization of Orthoferrite Thin Films
Your tasks
  • Research in the field of thin film deposition of epitaxial orthoferrite thin films
  • Structural, electrical and magnetic characterization of the thin films with analytic methods such as X-Ray diffraction, AFM, dielectric measurements, etc.
  • Evaluation of the multiferroic properties of thin films
  • Collaboration within the research teams at PSI
  • Carry out a PhD thesis on the above mentioned topics and publish the relevant results
Your profile
You hold a master in chemistry, physics or material science. We are looking for a student with interest in doing experimental work and interdisciplinary team spirit. This position requires good communication skills in both, German and English. Experience in programming (LabVIEW) would be an asset and basic knowledge in (photo-) electrochemistry, analytical techniques, thin films, vacuum techniques, and/or thin film analysis is advantageous.
