The Chemical Biology Department is part of Therapeutic Modalities (TMo) within Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED). We deliver leading edge science to drive the success of Roche’s early pipeline discovery research activities through strong expertise in high throughput or focused screening platforms, DNA encoded library technology, translational protein science & enzymology/biophysics, phenotypic cell-based screening and stem cell platforms, biostructure determination and computationally assisted drug discovery. Our breadth of capabilities further enable or drive innovative approaches across small, medium and large molecule therapeutic & drug delivery modalities.
The goal of this position is to provide the scientific and operational leadership to develop and run integrated and parallelized HTS and focused screening platforms for small molecule Hit Identification and follow-up screens qualifying hits for chemistry (Hit Qualification).
We are looking for a highly motivated scientific leader to join our team in Chemical Biology in the Roche Innovation Center Basel, Switzerland in order to expand and strengthen our efforts. Managing ~9 scientists with diverse expertise, including cell biology, biochemistry, HT assay development, screening automation, mass spectroscopy and biophysics, your responsibilities include:
  • With a matrix of cellular, biochemical and biophysical assay & reagent teams across the department, coordinate the development and integration of high throughput (HTS), focused, fragment-based and Hit Qualification screens & screening platforms.
  • Integrate a Hit qualification screening strategy into all Hit ID campaigns- comprising of low to high throughput biophysics & label-free or direct binding screens (eg Mass Spectroscopy-based, SPR, etc.).
  • Help coordinate the integration of Compound Logistics processes with the remits of integrated Hit ID-Hit qualification screening strategies.
  • Work with Cheminformatics and Computational chemists to provide integrated screening data interrogation and outputs.
  • Participate in a leadership team which builds best practices and strategies for Hit Qualification work streams for all Hit ID programs, and ensure a “Hit Qualification” profiling strategy is in place for all programs before primary screening begins.
  • Seek & test via external partners, CROs or collaborations: new screening technologies, assay methodologies or platforms that can better or faster screen or integrate screening platforms.
  • Who you are
You’re someone who wants to influence your own development. You’re looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies. Where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point.
This position offers the unique opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team in a leading pharmaceutical company. We expect outstanding motivation, creativity, analytical thinking and a strong scientific commitment. You have excellent scientific, interpersonal and communications skills with a track record in leadership and paying attention to the development of others, and scientists as leaders. You work very effectively and collaboratively in a highly matrixed, global organization. You will bring:
    • PhD (or relevant experience) in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, enzymology, or biophysics with > 5 years experience in running or managing multiple high-throughput screens or a screening facility(ies).
    • As an HTS and screening & automation specialist: well known, published and well connected to industry and academia experts and worldwide community (eg. SLAS) in the field of early drug discovery, automation platforms & technologies therein. Experience (expertise preferred) running phenotypic primary cell or stem cell screens required.
    • Track record in overseeing & integrating multiple, diverse Hit ID and Hit follow up screening technologies simultaneously (in addition to conventional HTS), with significant experience processing, pivoting & evaluating screening data from multiple sources.
    • Experience in leading teams who use insights from enzyme mechanistic information, binding kinetics and cellular disease biology to tailor Hit ID or Hit follow up screening assay formats or approaches.
    • Experience bench-marking internal screening and compound management processes, timings & technologies with industry standards or trends.
    • Track record of externally facing leadership: through continuously assessing/optimizing balance of in-house vs externalized efforts, designing or testing novel/new methodologies that could speed up and increase the quality of hit ID and Hit Qualification work streams and implementing/integrating external screening efforts into program workflows.
