Translational Medicine Leader, Ophthalmology

The TML is a member of the Ophthalmology Translational Medicine team and will be responsible for leading early development programs in this area. The TML will be responsible for contributing to the definition of the disease area strategy and designing the clinical and scientific content of Translational Medicine studies from entry into human up until phase 2 trials. During the Exploratory Phase (up to phase 3) the TML is a core team member of the Early Clinical Project Team where he/she designs and drive the implementation of clinical studies to achieve clinical proof of concept (POC). During the confirmatory phase of development (after clinical POC or full development decision) the TML is an ad-hoc team member and works alongside the CSL and the members of the Clinical Team to explore clinical data derived during the confirmatory phase to generate new hypothesis for additional biomarkers and new indications. His/Her specific responsibilities will include:
  • accountability for designing the exploratory clinical development plan (eCDP), and clinical/scientific leadership or the project
  • supporting target and clinical candidate selection
  • providing guidance on benefit/risk assessment and risk mitigation activities and contribute to the definition and development of biomarker strategies
  • collaboration with the Clinical Pharmacologist and Biomarker scientists to ensure the clinical data package will be sufficient for transition to later development
  • direct responsibility for POC enabling activities, POC protocol synopsis, study protocols, data evaluation, clinical study reports and related regulatory documents
  • proposing, establishing and leading external collaborations to address strategic and tactical needs of agreed translational science and POC strategies

    Our ideal candidate is a M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. with a specialization in Ophthalmology or relevant field. You should have at least 5 years of early development experience in industry or be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in academia. Additionally, you bring the following qualifications:
    • experience with investigator initiated or industry sponsored early (Phase I and/or II) clinical trials as well as with conducting either basic or clinical research in this area
    • proven record of scientific achievement as evidenced by presentations and publications in peer reviewed journals
    • familiarity with preclinical disease models
    • clinical practice/research experience in Ophthalmology
    • have an interest in the interface between drug discovery and early clinical development
