Aufgabenbereich / Responsibilities

The aDNA Group at the Institute of Evolutionary Medicine (IEM) is seeking a highly motivated PhD student for a research project related to ancient microbiomes:

The project will concern “Evolution of the human microbiome: Molecular insights from ancient Egyptian samples”. The work will involve a large study in archeogenetics, laboratory analysis, as well as extensive data and statistical analysis. The project will be based at the Institute of Evolutionary Medicine, at the University of Zürich (UZH), but will be conducted in close collaboration with researchers around the world and will involve some international travels.

Anforderungen / Qualifications

We are seeking a highly motivated, hardworking and productive student who is interested and capable of contributing to a large research team consisting of e.g., Ancient Biomolecular Scientists and Egyptologists (linked to an ongoing Swiss National Science Foundation Project on the Study of Internal Organs of ancient Egyptian Mummies; http://p3.snf.ch/project-162803). The ideal candidate will show great abilities to work in a team environment and strong expertise in experimental genetics, and the molecular tools used in next-generation sequencing and population genomics. She/he should have a strong background in molecular biology, particularly in molecular methods for generating data from low quality samples, and be familiar with basic concepts of microbiomes and archaeogenetics. Experience in the analysis of ancient DNA and/or Next-Generation Sequencing will be considered positively but is not mandatory.
