We have recently discovered that adsorbing proteins can significantly interact with a zone that is a few nanometers below the substrate surface. You can study the fundamental mechanism of this new effect in a PhD thesis and learn how to control adsorption and desorption, hydration and evaporation. We already suspect that the presence of water molecules inside the subsurface is a key factor to understand these new long-range interaction forces. You will learn to produce unique plasma polymer films, which consist of hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic vertical gradients, and you will analyze them with top modern surface analytical tools.

Protein adsorption is considered to be the first step that controls bio-interactions, so you will interact with colleagues in biology.

The offered PhD work thus combines the fields of surface and interface science, plasma deposition, and bio-sensing. The experimental work will be done at Empa in St. Gallen and the PhD is obtained in affiliation with the ETH Zürich, Department of Materials, via Prof. M. Heuberger.

Your profile

  • Completed Master’s degree in materials science, physics, chemistry or similar.
  • Experience with surface characterization methods.
  • Highly motivated, communicative and interest in interdisciplinary research.
  • Language skills: English, German (advantageous).


The position will be available from now on and is funded for three years (by SNF).
