Within the research lines of the lab, EMPave addresses the development of Innovative Environmental and Multifunctional Pavements. In this new project new designs of asphalt mixtures modified with phase change materials will be developed to minimize temperature-related performance problems of roads as well as the effect of the so-called heat island effect in urban areas. As additive with desirable properties of storing heat energy in a latent form, phase change materials have been widely used in the field of concrete buildings for energy saving purposes. Nevertheless, the applications of phase change materials in thermoplastic materials, such as asphalt roads, have been shortly explored. Different alternatives of PCM will be analysed regarding the thermodynamic stability with asphalt materials as well as the mixing conditions. A thermodynamic system model will be developed to describe the behaviour of the PCM-asphalt mixture. Based on this model, the effect of critical parameters on the thermal behaviour of the PCM-asphalt mixtures will be investigated. The parameters to be studied are: PCM concentration, particle size distribution, melting temperature of the PCM, heat of fusion of the PCM, subcooling effect and heat conductivity of the PCM. The overall project will be conducted in close collaboration with the Thermal Energy Storage group of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences. Therefore also a working place at the Labs in Lucerne will be provided.

We are looking for a highly motivated, open-minded and flexible person with a strong interest in materials science and ready to work in our international team. The successful candidate should have a PhD degree preferably in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or similar disciplines. The position requires strong background in thermal energy storage with phase change materials and applications. Knowledge in microencapsulated PCM in buildings materials for energy savingsis of advantage. The candidate should have experience writing publications and conferences. Fluency in English is also required.
