Polymer processing methods such as the electrospinning technique will be employed in this interdisciplinary PhD project which combines physics, material sciences, engineering and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. In the latest, in-situ (SAXS, XRD) studies based on the combination of structural analysis with applied external fields such as temperature, humidity or mechanical load will lead to a better understanding of materials and system performances. Synergies with microscopy methods such as TEM and other X-ray based methods such as X-ray µ-Computed Tomography (µ-CT) and / or Phase Contrast Imaging (XPCI) will be used.

Desired profile

  • Completed Master`s degree in chemistry, physics or materials science.
  • Previous experience with Small Angle X-ray Scattering SAXS and X-ray diffraction XRD.
  • Additional skills and expertise in mechanical engineering and electronics would be appreciated.
  • Highly motivated, communicative and interest in interdisciplinary research.
  • Language skills: English, German (advantageous)


Project duration of 3 years is planned in order to carry out the above research tasks in form of a PhD thesis. The project is supported by Empa and the Swiss National Science Foundation, and the candidate will perform his research at Empa in St. Gallen. Desired s
