Since the isolation and electrical characterization of graphene, 2D materials have emerged as highly promising for next generation electronic applications built from Van der Waals (VdW) heterostructures. In a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, and in collaboration with the Physics Department of the University of Zurich, we aim at using graphene related molecular quantum dots as probe structures to elucidate the bonding and electronic interaction of graphene (for which the molecules act as local analogues) with other 2D materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC 1T-TaS2 and 2H-MoS2) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The emphasis in this project is on the high resolution (spatial and energy) characterization of the bonding and electronic interaction between molecules and different 2D materials by low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) as well as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).
We offer a 3 year PhD position (PhD degree from the University of Zurich) within an international team of highly motivated researchers with a very strong background in surface physics, nanomaterials synthesis, characterization and modelling. The successful candidate will benefit from an excellently equipped and efficient work environment in an internationally renowned laboratory.
The ideal candidate is a determined, creative and communicative physicist or chemist having preferably experience in the field of scanning probe methods, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) techniques and the preparation of atomically clean surfaces.
This fulltime position is immediately available for a candidate with a masters or diploma degree in Physics, Chemistry or Materials Sciences (or related) with a planned duration of 3 years.
