The Glaciology Group at the Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology and the Exploration and Environmental Geophysics Group at the Institute of Geophysicshave an immediate opening for
Two PhD positions in cryosphere geophysics
The primary topicof the first project is to perform an in-depth study of glacier ice physics. This will be achieved by means of a comprehensive 3D crosshole experiment at one or two suitable locations on Alpine glaciers. Seismic and ground-penetrating radar data will be acquired and analyzed with state-of-the-art tomographic inversion algorithms. The geophysical measurements will be complemented with ice core drillings, and the cores will be analyzed with extensive laboratory investigations. The primary topic of the second project is concerned with glacier bed properties of Alpine glaciers. A detailed characterization of this zone is critical for understanding mechanisms of glacier dynamics. For that purpose we will perform surface-based 2D and 3D geophysical surveys using seismic and ground-penetrating radar techniques. Data analysis will not only include latest technologies of reflection processing, but also full waveform inversion algorithms will be employed. A key aspect of both projects is the tight coupling of geophysical surveying and data analyses with glaciological and hydrological techniques. The successful candidates are expected to seek a close collaboration with researchers from these related fields.
The successful candidatesshould hold a Master degree either in geophysics, glaciology, physics, mathematics, or engineering, and should have a keen interest and preferably some experience in digital signal processing and inversion theory. Some experience in undertaking geophysical or glaciological fieldwork in mountain environment would be an advantage. We are dynamic international research groups working on a wide variety of high profile topics in applied and computational geophysics and glaciology. The working languages in our groups are English and German.
