Software Engineer for the Data-Intensive Applications and Systems Laboratory (DIAS)

The Data-Intensive Applications and Systems Lab, led by Prof. Anastasia Ailamaki, is looking for an experienced

Software Engineer

to support the lab’s research activities.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • C++ application and tool development in close collaboration with research staff working on novel data management tools and algorithms
  • Co-lead interdisciplinary software development project for federated data management platform in collaboration with other project partners
  • Support research staff to bring research prototypes to production-grade software tools
  • Implement best-practices for maintainable software development, including but not limited to: continuous integration, documentation, adherence to and improvement of coding standards
  • Play an active role in education & support for research staff, including developing internal course material on software design and development

Essential skills and experience required:

  • Expert knowledge in modern C++ software design/implementation
  • Extensive experience using UNIX/Linux operating systems
  • Knowledge of networking and distributed systems
  • Very good familiarity in software development life-cycle, such as versioning, debugging, workflows, testing, QA
  • Applied database experience, SQL
  • Good team player and fluent English in speech and writing


  • Knowledge in distributed or parallel computing
  • Experience in interdisciplinary software development projects
  • Experience in software project management, i.e., requirements gathering, software design, development and deployment
  • Experience in teaching and education


  • Bachelors or Masters degree in computer science or equivalent.
  • Successful track record in developing production-grade software and in leading software projects
  • Experience with software design and maintenance of medium-scale projects
