STI - PhD position on Fast and stable simulation and design tools for digital optics

The NANOPHOTONICS AND METROLOGY LABORATORY NAMat EPFL ( http://nam.epfl.ch/) has openings for prospective PhD students (Early stage researchers) in the area of Microoptics and advanced optical design in collaborative projects with industry.

The project will be dealing with further development of the design and simulation methods for diffractive optical elements. One particular focus is on the investigation of fast approximate methods of simulation of the interaction of light fields with DOEs and both the comparison with exact rigorous simulation and experimental results obtained from fabricated structures. Another focus will be the inclusion of these simulation methods into design algorithms for performance optimized diffractive optical elements. The researcher will get access to simulation as well as measurement tools (both commercial and HOLOEYE's proprietary), which will support his project.

  • Starting date: from October 1, 2016, but flexible.
  • Education: Masters degree in physics, mathematics or photonics.

HOLOEYE is a leading provider for design, development and commercialization of industrial microdisplay applications, adaptive micro-optics and diffractive optical elements. Our optical components and devices are utilized in numerous applications ranging from holographic display and security systems to optical metrology, optical switching, biophotonics, laser beam splitting, laser pulse shaping, and laser material processing.

  • Knowledge in Fourier optics, diffraction theory and physical optics is required.
  • Programming skills, particularly C/C++ and Matlab/Octave, are required.
  • Knowledge of microoptical fabrication methods is beneficial.
  • Previous practical experience in optical labwork is beneficial for joint design of experiments.
  • Work experience in an industrial environment would be beneficial.

The position is offered within NOLOSS European Industrial Doctorate Innovative Training Network program. The position is available for 3 years. The remuneration comprises monthly living allowance, mobility allowance and family allowance (if applicable) according to MSCA Guidelines.

To be eligible, the candidate must be an Early Stage Researcher - ESR. She/He must not have a PhD and must have fewer than four years of research experience.
At the time of the selection, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work or studies) in the country where they will be recruited for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the starting date.

Acceptance by a doctoral school at EPFL is mandatory.
