Respiratory Tract Deposition Modeling

The objective of PMI’s R&D center is to develop and assess products with the potential to reduce the risks of smoking-related diseases. This project is at the core of our business: our vision is that one day all adult smokers who otherwise wouldn’t quit will switch to what we call reduced-risk products, or RRPs*. We are looking for an enthusiastic Scientist with the following assets:

  • PhD in applied mathematics with experience in scientific computing, physical modeling and numerical methods OR a background in physics, engineering or chemistry with scientific computing and multiphase transport phenomena simulations skills
  • Expertise in computational modeling and simulations of multiphase flows with aerosols
  • User or preferentially developer knowledge concerning open-source OpenFOAM
    ®computational platform
  • Experience in high‐level programming languages (C++)
  • Knowledge of Linux operational systems (shell scripting)
  • Practical knowledge of High Performance Computing aspects
  • Writing skills (for publications)
  • Fluent in English

As part of the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, you will play a key role in finding innovative solutions for increasing the value of our scientific evidence packages and ultimately improving speed to the market.

Project accountabilities:

  • Development of innovative modeling and simulation capabilities to computationally address complex multispecies aerosol flows
  • Leveraging state-of-the-art computational tools to investigate evolution and deposition of RRPs aerosols under realistic consumer conditions
  • Predictions and optimization of multi-phase aerosol dynamics in realistic airways geometries to target aerosol delivery and deposition, addressing specific questions defined in agreement with scientists
  • Implementation of novel numerical methods and algorithms on High-Performance Computing facilities
  • Support aerosol exposure experiments leveraging state-of-the-art aerosol generation systems and ex-vivo cast models

*Reduced Risk Products (“RRPs”) is the term we use to refer to products with the potential to reduce individual risk and population harm in comparison to smoking cigarettes. PMI’s RRPs are in various stages of development and commercialization, and we are conducting extensive and rigorous scientific studies to determine whether we can support claims for such products of reduced exposure to harmful and potentially harmful constituents in smoke, and ultimately claims of reduced disease risk, when compared to smoking cigarettes. Before making any such claims, we will rigorously evaluate the full set of data from the relevant scientific studies to determine whether they substantiate reduced exposure or risk. Any such claims may also be subject to government review and authorization, as is the case in the USA today
