The Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI)is an international research center in Basel, Switzerland with over 300 members of 40 different nationalities dedicated to basic research in areas of relevance to human health, and to the training of students and postdoctoral fellows. The FMI is affiliated with the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research as well as the University of Basel. Its core research funding from the Novartis Research Foundation is supplemented by competitive fellowships and awards from national and international funding agencies.
To oversee and manage our HR department, we are looking for an experienced and motivated

Head Human Resources (100%)


 As Head HR FMI you are responsible for implementing the strategic design, evaluation, coordination and administration of HR practices and policies. You'll take the lead understanding FMI’s unique HR requirements and translate these into successful HR practices. This includes the responsibility for the technical-, administrative-, financial and organizational aspects of the HR department, the line management of 3 team members, and the coordination of counseling for 200 PhD students and postdoctoral fellows.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the line management in their responsibilities and coaching leaders in developing teams and individuals towards their scientific goals
  • As member of the wider Institute leadership, identifying, analyzing, synthesizing and presenting insight into key issues to enable good decisions in a complex setting
  • Personnel administration e.g. work permits, offers & contracts, mutations, HR reporting, salary changes etc.
  • Supporting managers and employees in ensuring a positive employee experience, handle challenging and sensitive issues with diligence and care

The role is broad and requires a dedicated individual who moves fluidly between designing effective processes and hands-on execution. You will serve as the primary interface with all levels of the FMI staff and employees and must possess the organizational insight, judgment and skills to serve as an effective advocate and liaison in a complex context with a diverse and largely foreign population.

Ideal profile

This challenging position is for an HR professional with a proven track record of several years leading a diverse HR environment. You hold a relevant university degree (HR, economics, social science, business administration) or have higher HR training. Experience in a life sciences or academic environment and with 3rd party funding sources is desirable. You will need capacity for complexity, strong communication skills and fluency in German and English. French is also desirable.
