Internship/Thesis 4-6 Month

“Influence of Ball Burnishing on strength properties and surface quality of medical implants and devices”


As a department for process technology development, we are developing the future production methods for medical implants in order to improve efficiency and quality of our products. We are searching for an engaged and motivated student (m/f) to help us pushing new technologies forward.

Your responsibilities
  • Literature study of ball burnishing
  • Collect data from past trials and final reports
  • Perform burnishing tests on our Index G200 testing machine (with our support)
  • Test measurement equipment to monitor tool wear during the process
  • Develop procedures for burnishing geometrical features like flutes, balls and 3d-curved surfaces
  • Scout for applications of this technology within Johnson & Johnson
  • Produce samples for fatigue tests and support our test lab during those investigations
  • Characterize surface quality and fatigue strength after ball burnishing
  • Perform hardness measurements and residual stress measurements of the burnished samples
  • Conclude your investigations, literature and past trials in a “Process Guidebook” in English as a collection of our knowledge of ball burnishing

  • Student with Bachelor’s degree in material science, mechanical engineering or equivalent areas
  • Fluency in English, especially writing
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks consisting of varying degrees of complexity
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and apply practical solutions
  • Self-motivation and problem-solving attitude
