Flyability is an EPFL spin-off developing and bringing to market collision-tolerant and safe drones.
The company aims at making a significant change in the use of drones by allowing them to enter
spaces where no robot can currently penetrate and allow them to fly in contact with humans without
risk. Flyability has received multiple awards for its innovative ideas and has a worldwide recognition.
Our first market is in industrial inspection and will be followed by the consumer and search and
rescue markets. We are looking for highly motivated engineers to join our team and work with us on
mechanical design and industrialization for a duration of 6 to 8 months.
For this internship, you will join the startup and work together with the members of the team
responsible for the design of the drone’s protection mechanism. Should a collision occur, the impact
is dissipated by the protective cage while the robot remains undisturbed thanks to the decoupling
system action. This passive protection is one of the main novelties brought by Flyability to the world
Your mission will be to continue the research work on the influence of the decoupling system’s
parameters on its behavior during collisions. The final goal of this project is the optimization of this
A large part of this project will be held using a numerical rigid body model. You will have to improve
the existing MBDyn model in order to use it for parametric optimization. Another important aspect
will be practical testing, which will allow the verification of several hypothesis and the model
correlation. To do so, you will have access to our fully furnished workshop and test room.
• Master degree in Mechanical engineering ongoing or equivalent.
• Relevant experience and personal interest in numerical simulation. (MBDyn preferred)
• Good knowledge in rigid body elements / Dynamic.
• Autonomous, self-motivated and curious individuals who are not afraid of the unknown and
willing to learn fast.
• Proficient with CAD.
• Practical person.
• Fluency in English
