Doctoral position at the University della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano, Switzerland
IDIDS, the InterDisciplinary Institute of Data Science at USI, seeks a doctoral student for a three-
year project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) on the theme: “Statistical
solutions for regression-type models with big spatial data”. The position offers an internationally
Due to the increased human ability to acquire detailed information, recent decades have
witnessed a formidable explosion of geo-located data. Spatial econometric methods provide the
right environment to identify causal mechanisms and assist empirically-supported decisions.
However, such models become computationally prohibitive, even with supercomputers, when
applied to very large datasets. This doctoral project aims to evaluate the performance of currently
available methods when they are applied to very large datasets of spatial data and to identify
possible alternative models. The successful candidate is expected to contribute theoretical results,
software routines and applications to environmental, economic or health data.
Professor Giuseppe Arbia (IDIDS – USI) and Professor Antonietta Mira (IDIDS – USI) are Co-
Principal Investigators on the project and will advise the doctoral student in all phases of the
research during the three-year project.
The successful candidate will have recently acquired a Master’s degree in Statistics, Econometrics
or Applied Mathematics and have a solid background in statistical modeling and software
(1) Strong quantitative skills;
(2) Strong computational skills preferably on the software R;
(3) Strong commitment to pursue a PhD program in Lugano, and
(4) Strong scientific writing and communication skills in English;
Other conditions being equal, candidates with knowledge of at least one of the Swiss national
languages will be favored. The successful candidate will be required to take residence in Canton
Ticino – the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland.
