About the role

The GC Corporate Centre leads a global team of approximately 30 professionals. The GC Corporate Centre has overall responsibility for steering a broad spectrum of legal areas of coverage for the Swiss Re Group, including Group strategic transactions, projects and restructurings, cross Business Unit M&A, investments, joint ventures, capital markets transactions, securities law, structured (re)insurance transactions and matters relating to the day to day operations of Swiss Re Treasury and Asset Management.

In addition to the aforementioned specified areas of coverage, The GC Corporate Centre carries out a Group oversight and governance role which is in line with sound corporate governance practice and is intended to ensure conflicts of interest among the Group and Business Units are appropriately spotted and addressed.

In carrying out his/her role, the GC Corporate Centre will lead the Corporate Centre legal operations and reporting, maintain legal and regulatory oversight for certain intragroup finance and/or capital markets legal entities, and will effectively and efficiently manage internal and external resources.

Main Tasks/Responsibilities:

Business Partnering / Legal Support:
• Be a trusted, strategic partner to the business by providing timely, high quality legal advice and clearly articulating legal, regulatory, compliance risks and opportunities
• Strive for operational excellence and cost efficiency through continuous focus on assuring optimal use of internal and external legal resources
• Apply legal practices, procedures and controls that are efficient and effective and comply with Group guidelines, local corporate governance practice, statutory requirements, and other applicable regulatory regimes
• Coordinate and handle day-to-day legal issues and matters within scope of mandate and assure appropriate escalation where necessary
• Ensure full collaboration with other members of Division Legal & Compliance
• Ensure satisfactory execution in a matrix organizational environment
• Apply highest ethical standards and maintain independence as a lawyer

Team Managerial and Leadership Tasks:
• Lead a global team of approximately 30 professionals
• Lead by inspiring and engaging others; apply frequent, honest, fair, clear and constructive feedback to colleagues and stakeholders at all levels
• Attract, develop and coach talents and share them across the organisation; encourage people to explore opportunities beyond their own area; motivate strong and sustainable performance from staff
• Enable and perform relevant Human Capital process of employee life-cycle (Performance, Annual Compensation, Personal Growth/Career Development, etc).
• Prudently manage cost centre budget
• As a member of the Legal and Compliance ET, work to deliver on strategy and actively contribute to all divisional reporting requirements

Governance and Reporting Activities:
• Apply legal practices, procedures and controls that are efficient and effective and comply with Group guidelines, Swiss Re corporate governance practice, and applicable laws and regulation
• Maintenance of specific Group Standards and Guidelines
• Provide material updates on legal matters and legal and regulatory developments for Legal and Compliance reports
• Implement controls to reduce operational risk, including but not limited to Risk Control Self-Assessments

Boards, Committees and other Legal Advisory Representation:
• Member of Legal & Compliance Executive Team
• Advisor to Finance Transactions Review Committee, Asset Management Investment Committee, Asset Management Executive Team, Derivatives Use Committee, Emergency Management Team and Advisor to Swiss Re Management Ltd Board of Directors


About the team

The GC Corporate Centre will have a direct reporting line to the Group Chief Legal Officer and a dotted line to the Group Chief Investment Officer. The GC Corporate Centre will serve as an integral member of the Division Legal & Compliance executive team and as an advisor to the Asset Management Executive Team. The GC Corporate Centre will also be required from time to time to provide updates and reports to the Group Chief Legal Officer, the Group Chief Investment Officer, certain Group Executive Committee members, Group Managing Directors, the Group Board of Directors and board committees, and the Group Executive Committee.


About You

• Proven strong people leadership - ability to inspire and engage, to lead with clarity and transparency and to create impact in a complex, cross-functional environment
• Technical expertise in effectively managing legal and regulatory risks associated with financial services sector, and more specifically as it relates to the remit of the outlined GC role
• Ability to effectively relate to and understand clients' needs and to translate into concrete tasks with value added results
• Superior communication, presentation and project management skills with demonstrated track record
• Fully trained lawyer with a minimum of 10 years PQE in a well-respected global organization or law firm
• English language required (other languages a plus)
• Travel will be required for role
