Software Engineer 80%

Scientific Software and Data Management (SSDM) is an interdisciplinary group supporting ETH researchers in data management, automated data analysis and custom software development for life sciences and other scientific disciplines. One of our core responsibilities is the development of openBIS, an open-source application for managing data produced by data-intensive scientific workflows. The SSDM group has members located in Zurich and Basel; the working language of the group is English. The software engineer works in an agile team participating in requirements analysis, design, implementation, and testing of solutions for the research groups that are our customers. He or she interacts with researchers to understand their needs and design solutions to address them. The software engineer also engages with our development process and participates in the evaluation of tools, frameworks and methodologies and facilitates their deployment within the team.

We are seeking a software engineer with 3+ years' experience in Java and Python. Experience in Javascript and web application development is also desirable, as is experience with relational and other databases. You have a demonstrated ability to work with large software products and be able to problem solve and extend code you are not always familiar with. Other programming languages such as Matlab and R or experience working with image data would be an asset. You should have a degree in computer science or a related technical discipline such as mathematics or physics, ideally a master's. Knowledge of life-science measurement technologies and an understanding of natural sciences, especially biology, mathematics and statistics, are a plus. In addition to honed technical abilities, this position demands excellent communication skills (in English) and the ability to discuss projects with non-IT customers. Curiosity and creative problem solving ability are also necessary to successfully enable effective research and scientific collaboration within and beyond ETH Zurich. The position is located in Basel, though occasional travel to Zurich will be required. The initial contract will be for a period of one (1) year, with a possibility of renewal.
