Pharma Services, Histotechnologist II

Permanent Position, 100%, Rolle

The Histotechnologist II will report to the laboratory Supervisor/Manager. He/she works under general supervision to precisely and accurately performs a variety of routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures. S/he will research, troubleshoot, and resolve histology related inquiries and problems within the laboratory. This position requires the production of the highest quality of embedding, microtomy, tissue grossing, tissue processing, and H&E staining, special staining and equipment maintenance. Employees in this position perform a full range of technical procedures in the preparation of tissue specimens.


  • Receives specimens of tissue and ensures proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples
  • Processes paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting
  • Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to established SOP’s
  • Prepares tissue specimens with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis
  • Embeds processed tissue in paraffin
  • Performs coverslipping of stained slides either manually or automated
  • Performs all special stain procedures according to established guidelines
  • Performs filing of finished blocks and slides
  • Performs IHC testing under the direct supervision technical supervisor or other qualified pathologist
  • Prepares solutions and reagents for IHC procedures under the direct supervision of a qualified technologist, technical supervisor or other qualified pathologist
  • Performs reagent and control lot to lot testing
  • Helps maintain acceptable productivity, TAT and workflow
  • Reports problems concerning individual cases, tests, equipment, and supplies to the department supervisor or lead technologist to ensure timely resolution
  • Responds promptly to pathologists, technologists, and administrative requests
  • Maintains laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as cleaning, performing or scheduling equipment and instrument maintenance/calibration/certification, as required. Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests
  • Demonstrates initiative in making suggestions to improve efficiency and productivity and provides consistent feedback
  • Attends monthly department and any additional training/educational meetings
  • Participates in quality control initiatives. Prepares lab for inspection from regulatory institutions
Education & Qualification Requirements
  • Education: Associates degree in the field and complete and one year internship; complete a long-term training program in a histopathology lab; Bachelor Degree in Biology, Biochemistry or equivalent
  • Experience: 4 years of equivalent experience as a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist preferred
  • Solid understanding of general laboratory techniques with emphasis on department specific techniques
  • Possesses appropriate computer skills to accomplish tasks
  • Proficient in written and spoken English. French is an advantage
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standards
  • Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual
