As the Director of Business Development you will be responsible for identifying external collaboration opportunities in oncology on behalf of our Research, Development and commercialisation function. You will work closely and lead a cross functional team to evaluate and conduct due diligence on new opportunities. In doing so, you will also lead the team to ensure endorsement from key governance committees to transact, manage the interactions with potential partners, draft and negotiate term sheets, and driving deals to completion. The position reports into the Global Head of Oncology Partnering.

Key responsibilities

  • With Pharma and pRED colleagues, you will participate in triaging the large number of unsolicited incoming preclinical and clinical stage licensing and M&A opportunities in oncology that Roche receives.
  • You'll also effectively run negotiations with external partnering stakeholders (VCs, key academic institutions & investigators, and oncology companies) in Roche areas of interest in oncology
  • Facilitate communications and interactions with internal colleagues in the evaluation, diligence, and transaction processes
  • Build trusting relationships with external partners so that Roche is “in the game” for the most exciting opportunities in oncology
  • Staying abreast of key developments in oncology by reading the literature, going to conferences, and interacting with internal and external partners
  • Working one or more Pharma disease area strategy teams and the pRED oncology disease therapeutic area, ensure that Pharma and pRED’s views on important new data from key conferences is translated into actionable partnering activities
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with key internal stakeholders in Basel and South San Francisco
  • Build an internal consensus around deals and present to key governance committees to secure endorsement for moving Forward

    Skills & Professional Experience:

    We're looking for people with good technical skills - ideally a PhD in a chemical or biological science and/or MD required; preferably with focus on oncology. An MBA in addition to technical degree is preferred.

    • At least 6-8 years’ job related experience (Research, Development, Business), preferably in top-tier strategy consulting, investment banking, venture capital, or pharma/biotech business development, preferably with experience in oncology
    • Proven track record in cross functional team leadership
    • Understanding of commercialization activities preferred
    • Fluent in English with excellent communication skills
    • Ability to travel (partnering and medical conferences, Basel/South San Francisco, to partners)
    • Regular availability for communication between Basel and South San Francisco (4 – 6 pm CET; 7-9 am PT)
