BBP - Scientific Computing Engineer


The EPFL Blue Brain Project ( BBP ), situated on the Campus Biotech in Geneva , Switzerland , applies advanced neuroinformatics , data analytics , high - performance computing and simulation - based approaches to the challenge of understanding the structure and function of the mammalian brain in health and disease . The BBP provides the community with regular releases of data , models and tools to accelerate neuroscience discovery and clinical translation through open science and global collaboration .


We are looking   for a


Scientific Computing Engineer


to strengthen its simulation and High Performance Computing team.


Major duties and responsibilities:

  • Participate to the development and implementation of numerical methods for the solution of differential equations (PDE, ODE, stochastic equations)
  • Participate to the development of scientific software running on large-scale parallel architectures
  • Technical survey of numerical methods


Essential skills and experience required:

  • Extensive experience in using and developing numerical methods for partial and ordinary differential equations
  • Understanding fundamental probability/statistical concepts and Monte Carlo methods
  • Good knowledge of C++ programming language
  • Experience in implementing distributed software using MPI
  • Familiarity with UNIX/LINUX operating systems
  • Good team player and fluent English in speech and writing



  • Good knowledge of linear algebraic methods and experience in using state of art libraries such as PETSc
  • Experience in developing and/or using mesh-based adaptive software and/or meshing software Ok
  • Working experience in using Python and/or R
  • Good knowledge of MPI and OpenMP to develop distributed applications at large scale
  • Professional experience with software development: unit testing, continuous integration, version control, debugging and documentation
  • Experience in using Agile/Scrum methodology



  • Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or similar
  • At least 2 years of working experience
  • Quality-driven work ethics
