BBP - Science Writer

The EPFL Blue Brain Project (BBP), situated on the Campus Biotech in Geneva, Switzerland, applies advanced neuroinformatics, data analytics, high-performance computing and simulation-based approaches to the challenge of understanding the structure and function of the mammalian brain in health and disease. The BBP provides the community with regular releases of data, models and tools to accelerate neuroscience discovery and clinical translation through open science and global collaboration. Within the Operations Division, we are currently looking for a:

Science Writer

to strengthen the External Relations & Communications Office.


Major duties and responsibilities:

The particular activities that a science writer undertakes depends upon the nature of the role and who they are writing for. Common activities may include:

  • Participation in the drafting of scientific papers and reports; Copy-editing scientific articles for publication in print and online
  • Persuasively communicating the organization’s mission and programs to potential funders; assembling and submitting funding requests, including letters, proposals, and presentations
  • Representing the Blue Brain Project at press conferences and acting as a spoke-person



  • Scientific background coupled with journalism or communications background
  • Capability to read scientific papers, abstracts etc. and translate materials to a lay audience
  • Excellent writing skills with experience in publishing attested by a dossier of published/edited scientific articles/media/books covering different scientific disciplines
  • Several years’ experience as a science writer, with a strong rec ord of peer-reviewed publications
  • English mother tongue. Full fluency in French would be considered an advantage
  • Strong interest in and non-specialist knowledge of a range of scientific disciplines; Previous experience in neuroscience & computing would be considered an advantage
  • Strong interest in current affairs and social media capabilities preferred.
